Home / Occasions / Christmas / DIY Christmas tree decoration (with an elfy twist)

An ornament of champions...

Here’s a merry, elfy DIY Christmas tree decoration you can make at home with your little one. It’s as cute as a sugar cane and it does something pretty magical too…

You see, back in the 1950s, a plucky Elf named Watson was so inspired by Santa’s tales of dazzling decorations in human homes that he set up the Annual Christmas Tree Awards. This year, you and your little helper can enter their competition: just make this elfish DIY Christmas tree decoration together and hang it on your best branch to let the elves know you’re taking part.

Take a look at our simple tutorial below, and hit the big red button to download our stencil (plus other top-secret assets). Fingers crossed for, ahem, victree!

You will need:

  • brightly coloured felt
  • scissors
  • utility knife
  • needle and thread
  • coloured string (optional)
  • printer

Let’s get crafting...

Step 1

Step 1

Using our stencil, cut out your envelope base. Two thirds of the way down, make two small horizontal slits with the utility knife. (Keep little hands away for this step.)

Step 2

Step 2

Cut out two strips of felt for the legs. Feed them through the slits so the tops of the legs poke through (see those white bits) and stitch them in.

Step 3

Step 3

Stitch the eyes, mouth, sock stripes and shoes onto your ornament—and the baubles onto your mini tree. (You can save time by stitching all the baubles with one long thread.) Your elf expression should be somewhere between delirious and ecstatic.

Step 4

Step 4

Sew the sides of your envelope together. (Blanket Stitch is the best way to do this. Pass the needle through both pieces of felt, then back through the thread loop before closing the stitch. If you’re unsure, you can find simple tutorials on Youtube.) Then stitch your tree to the inside top of the envelope.

Step 5

Step 5

Next, make a big loop (with thread or coloured string) for hanging. Put the knot end between the tree and envelope. Then place your stars on either side of the treetop and stitch them together securing the loop in place as you go. Now hang the envelope on your tree. How else will the elves know you’re entering their competition..

Step 6

Step 6

In secret, print out and fill in the mini certificate. Hide it somewhere safe. On Christmas eve, when everyone’s in bed, put the certificate into the envelope. Get your little one to peek inside on Christmas morning…
